Reframing Stadiou

27-31 Stadiou str., Athens, GR
Maro Markopoulou, Georgina Kourmouzi

Stadiou Street, is a piece and a landmark of Athenian History.  The transfer of the ministries located on the street creates an urban void, a carcass of office buildings from the 60s, which are in danger of being deserted or turned into another branch of a hotel chain.

It is important that life and human everyday life return to this part of the city, which will benefit not only the center itself but also the residents of Athens.  Living at a time when the housing problem in the capital of the country seems to be escalating, and more and more people of all ages find it difficult to find a residence near the center, it is important to take care of the creation of houses and building complexes that will be able to house the  citizens of Athens.  Houses affordable to the average Athenian student, young professional, elderly etc.

Thus, it is proposed to activate the strip of Stadiou 27,29,31, creating residences and freeing and consolidating their ground floors. The ground floors acquire the lost public character of the ground floors of Athens of the past, they turn towards the city and a space is created which can accommodate collections of the Museum of the City of Athens and periodic exhibitions. At the back of the lane, in the now open, uncovered area, a garden of acacia trees has been created, which will provide an open, pleasant, green space for the residents of the building complex.
