The study of the area focused on two main aspects: the analysis of the buildings along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and their relationship with the public space. Particular emphasis was placed on understanding the identity of the avenue, as revealed through the mosaic of its buildings.
Vasilissis Sofias Avenue showcases a remarkable architectural diversity. Preserved neoclassical mansions house embassies and museums, while pre-war and post-war apartment buildings with modernist features coexist with contemporary modern or brutalist apartments and public buildings.
A distinctive feature of the northern side of the avenue is the presence of forecourts in front of the buildings. These forecourts serve as transitional spaces, acting as thresholds between public and private areas.
Vasilissis Sofias Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares in the center of Athens, characterized by heavy vehicle traffic. However, along its length, there are limited areas where pedestrians can stop and interact, restricting the connection between people and the public space.
