S01 - Hellenic Parliament & Syntagma Sq.

Researchers: Myrsini Dimou, Maritonia Savri

Syntagma Square, in the center of Athens, is one of the most iconic public spaces in Greece. It was named so in honor of the Constitution granted by King Otto in 1843, after the uprising of the people and the army. It is located in front of the Hellenic Parliament, the historic building that originally served as a royal palace. The square is a hub of transportation and a landmark for both daily life and political or social events. Its design harmoniously blends green spaces with hardscapes, while its centerpiece, a fountain, serves as a gathering point for locals and visitors alike. The surrounding buildings, including ministries and hotels, complete the picture of a vibrant urban landscape that seamlessly merges history with modern life.
