The Real and the Ideal

Our intervention concerns the building that houses the services of the Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs and is located on Lykourgou 12 Street. Our building is located also on the axis of Athinas Street, which contains the Varvakeio market  that is open, daily, until today. Many products that are in the market left unused at the end of the day and end up not being sold. Our main idea is to expand the market in our building and create not only a place to reuse the left products, but also a place for the traders and workers to live. In the basement there will be a large storage area, with shelves and refrigerators, as well as preparation and cooking kitchens. Our main public program will be on the ground floor, where there will be social  kitchens so that people can become familiar with the products and learn how to use them. The ground floor, on the left side, from Lykourgou Street, will seem like a small market, as, daily, there will be the arrival and the arrangement of supplies. The right side will be more private and is the entrance for the short term housing units in the upfloors. The roof terrace is designed for dining and recreation, including a mini bar and a mini restaurant.
